Asian Area Studies is an interdisciplinary minor designed for students with an interest in any part of Asia. In addition to the requirements of the student's major department, the minor consists of 21 credits selected from such disciplines as anthropology, art history, economics, geography, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, political science, religious studies, speech, theatre arts, and appropriate Asian languages.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE MINOR: 21 credits
PRESCRIBED COURSES (6 credits)
HIST 174 or 175 <<HIST 172 can substitute for 174 or 175.>>
RL ST 003 <<RL ST 104, or 181 may substitute for 003>>
SUPPORTING COURSES AND RELATED AREAS (15 credits)
Select 15 credits, at least 6 at the 400 level
These courses include any course that counts toward the East Asian Studies major (in the case of the minor, there is no limit on the number of language credits that may be used).
Any other course that deals with any part of Asia (except the Middle East) may count toward this minor. Contact the faculty member in charge of the minor for approval of such courses. This approval process is not complex and can be done via e-mail.
Note well: many acceptable courses are not on a master list for the minor and therefore will not automatically be applied to the correct category on the transcript. In such cases, this process must be done manually. Students should check their degree audits regularly on e-lion and notify the faculty member in charge of the minor if any acceptable course(s) is not applied to the minor.
Courses for the minor may "double count." In other words any course a student uses to fulfill the requirements of general education, BA requirements (if applicable), a major, and/or another minor may also count toward the Asian Area Studies minor.
